techsupport | data backup

Backing up your data could be the most critical step you take in protecting your systems and network. I can show you how to this in a reliable way without spending a lot of money.

I recommend Retrospect (Dantz) backup software (see download link)
which is relatively inexpensive and easy to use.

For back media I prefer USB connected external hard drives (rather than tapes).

If you are retiring a desktop system with a good hard drive, you might consider getting a USB enclosure and turning the old drive into an external hard drive, which you can use for backing up data.

Your USB port should be USB 2.0 if you plan to backup large amounts of data. USB 2.0 has been around since 2001 and took a couple of years to become common. If your server is several years old you may not have 2.0 -- the old version USB is not fast enough to backup large amounts of data in a reasonable time-frame.
